On this occasion, the Registrar of SPU, Prof. Ramesh Kumar Rawat greeted students and faculty and shed light on the significance of this festival in the context of faith and divinity.
Overview of “Bhumchu”:
According to the Tibetan lunar calendar, “Bhumchu” is celebrated on 14thand 15th of first month of the calendar, devotees from across Sikkim and neighbouring countries of Nepal and Bhutan celebrate this festival. Bhum means a pot and Chu means water. On this occasion, a divine pot is prepared (associated with the memory of Padmasambhava or Guru Rinpoche)which is made of innumerable sacred soil, precious gems, collected from various auspicious places in India, is filled with water from the Rathong River and kept in the monastery. According to the tradition and rituals, lamas of the monastery check the quality and quantity of stored water and make predictions for the year by studying the level of water in the pot. If the pot is full, it is indication of prosperity. If low, famine is imminent. When dusty, an ominous year of strife and discord is predicted.
